What Happens If It Rains During a Swim Meet?

Dear Hammerhead Families,

We DO have practice this morning, Thursday 5/29. The water temperature is 75 degrees.

🌦️Summer Weather is unpredictable!

With summer weather comes the occasional rain shower, so we wanted to clarify what happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate on meet day or if it rains during practice times.

🌧 We DO swim in the rain!

As long as there is no lightning or thunder, the meet will continue as planned—even in the rain. So bring your ponchos and rain jackets !

⚡️ We DO NOT swim if there is lightning or thunder.

If lightning or thunder is seen or heard, we must clear the pool for at least 30 minutes. The clock resets each time lightning is seen or thunder is heard.

đźš— DO NOT LEAVE during a weather delay.

You may retreat to your vehicles or seek shelter, but please stay close by. A delay does not mean the meet is canceled. If conditions improve, we will resume swimming as quickly and safely as possible. Please do not head home unless you receive official word from the team.

🌀 If the weather causes a delay of more than 30 minutes, a decision will be made by both teams and meet officials to either:

  • Wait an additional 15 minutes
  • Complete the remaining events virtually
  • Reschedule the meet
  • Call the meet as official based on how much of it was completed

We always try our best to complete the meet safely and fairly, while also respecting your time and the efforts of our swimmers.

Thank you for your support and flexibility as we navigate Georgia’s unpredictable weather!

Go Hammerheads!
